Destination Champions: Exploring Barcelona for Meetings & Events

When it comes to finding a destination that blends rich culture, a warm climate, excellent infrastructure, and outstanding hospitality, Barcelona consistently comes out on top. As our Destination Champion for Barcelona, Claire Thorpe, can confidently say it’s a destination that not only ticks the practical boxes, but also creates a real sense of excitement for delegates. Here’s why…

Why Barcelona?

Barcelona is incredibly well connected, making it an ideal choice for international meetings and events.

The city’s airport, El Prat (BCN), offers direct flights from most major UK airports and key cities across Europe, the Middle East, and North America. Flight times from the UK are around two hours, and with frequent departures, it's easy to accommodate flexible travel arrangements. Upon arrival, the city centre is just a 20–30 minute transfer by taxi or train, keeping travel times short and manageable for delegates.

Barcelona also boasts excellent local transport. Whether it’s taxis, trams, buses, or the efficient metro system, getting around is easy, and the city's compact layout means many hotels, venues, and cultural attractions are within walking distance.

Things to consider when planning travel to Barcelona:

  • Event timings. Spain often operates to a slightly later daily schedule. Breakfast meetings are rare, and evening events tend to start later than in northern Europe.
  • Weather. Barcelona enjoys a Mediterranean climate, but summer months (July and August) can be extremely hot and humid, so spring and autumn are often preferred seasons for business events.
  • City taxes. Hotels charge a small city tourism tax per person per night, which should be factored into event budgets.
  • Busy periods. Barcelona hosts numerous major events like Mobile World Congress and various festivals, so early booking is advised to secure space and competitive rates.
Meeting and event spaces

Barcelona's venue options are incredibly diverse, offering something for every type and size of event:

  • Fira Barcelona. With its two large campuses (Montjuïc and Gran Via), Fira Barcelona is one of Europe’s most important trade fair institutions, ideal for large exhibitions and congresses.
  • CCIB (Barcelona International Convention Centre). A striking, contemporary waterfront venue in the innovative Diagonal Mar area, perfect for conferences requiring large plenary and exhibition spaces.
  • Palau de Congressos de Catalunya. A beautifully designed conference venue located within the Fairmont Rey Juan Carlos I complex, offering flexible meeting spaces and lush gardens.
  • W Hotel Barcelona. Instantly recognisable along the city’s beachfront, the W provides luxury meeting rooms and spectacular sea views. Ideal for incentives and high-end corporate events.
  • Historical venues. For something unique, spaces like the Casa Llotja de Mar or Hospital de Sant Pau offer breathtaking architecture and a sense of occasion perfect for gala dinners or exclusive receptions.
"During a recent client conference, I had the opportunity to work with the Grand Hyatt Barcelona (formerly The Hotel Sofia), and it really stood out. The hotel is modern, stylish, and extremely well equipped for meetings and events, offering superb MICE facilities including flexible meeting rooms, a large ballroom, and excellent breakout spaces. Its location on the prestigious Avenida Diagonal makes it easily accessible, and the service throughout the event was seamless, a fantastic option for corporate groups looking for a professional yet welcoming venue."

Smaller groups are also well catered for, with an array of boutique hotels offering intimate meeting spaces and rooftop terraces that make for unforgettable networking events.

Places to eat out

Food is truly at the heart of the Barcelona experience, and it can easily become an integral part of your event programme:

  • Disfrutar. Holding multiple Michelin stars, this modern restaurant is perfect for VIP dinners, offering creative tasting menus that will impress even the most seasoned diners.
  • El Nacional. A unique dining concept housed in a stunning art deco building, where groups can experience different types of Spanish cuisine under one roof — ideal for informal delegate dinners.
  • Can Solé. For authentic paella and seafood, this long-standing Barceloneta restaurant offers a traditional, high-quality experience.
  • Mercado de la Boqueria. Why not start a team-building challenge at Barcelona’s iconic market, with teams sourcing ingredients for a cooking class afterwards?
Entertainment and teambuilding

Barcelona’s lively spirit provides an abundance of ways to entertain and engage delegates outside the meeting room:

  • Private sailing tours. Organise a sunset cruise from Port Vell, a refreshing way to relax after a busy conference day.
  • Guided cultural tours. Explore iconic landmarks such as Sagrada Família, Casa Batlló, or the Gothic Quarter with expert guides who bring Barcelona’s history and creativity to life.
  • Flamenco evenings. Add a touch of authentic Spanish culture with a private flamenco performance followed by tapas tasting.
  • Cooking workshops. Hands-on cookery classes (paella, tapas, or even Catalan sweets) offer fantastic team-building opportunities and an immersive cultural experience.
  • Football at FC Barcelona. Arrange stadium tours or even private access experiences at Spotify Camp Nou, a must for sports enthusiasts.
Exploring Barcelona’s UNESCO World Heritage Sites
"I was fascinated to discover that Barcelona is home to nine UNESCO World Heritage Sites, a true testament to the city’s incredible cultural and architectural legacy. Many of these, such as the breathtaking Sagrada Família, Park Güell, and Casa Milà, were designed by the iconic architect Antoni Gaudí. These remarkable landmarks aren’t just must-see attractions, they can also be thoughtfully woven into event programmes, offering opportunities for exclusive tours, private experiences, or inspiring team-building activities that leave a lasting impression on delegates."
Sustainability in Barcelona

Sustainability is increasingly a key driver for destination selection, and Barcelona has made impressive strides.

The city was one of the first to receive Biosphere certification for responsible tourism, and many venues and hotels have strong green credentials, including carbon offset programmes, water conservation initiatives, and locally sourced catering options.

For organisations keen to align with their ESG policies, Barcelona offers meaningful choices to support sustainable events.

Claire’s final take on Barcelona
"In 2024, Barcelona was one of Trinity’s top 10 destinations for oversees events and I can see why it’s so popular with our clients. Barcelona is more than just a pretty backdrop for events, it’s a city that understands business tourism, delivers professional infrastructure, and adds a vibrant cultural flair that delegates genuinely love. Whether you’re planning a large international conference, a senior leadership retreat, or a high-energy incentive programme, Barcelona has the venues, the spirit, and the expertise to ensure your event is a success."
