We’re passionate about uncovering the best destinations for meetings and events. That’s why earlier this year we launched our Destination Champions, a monthly spotlight on cities that offer exceptional event experiences.
This month, our spotlight is on Lisbon, and there’s no one better to guide us than Marcia, who was not only born in Portugal and lived there for more than 15 years, but also recently returned from an unforgettable FAM trip hosted by the Lisbon Convention Bureau (Visit Lisboa) in partnership with Hopscotch Group.
"Lisbon is one of those cities that just captivates you. From its golden light and riverside charm to its people and the incredible diversity of experiences on offer. Having lived in Portugal, I already had a soft spot for Lisbon, but this trip reignited my love for it as a MICE destination. We were treated to a whirlwind of creativity, culture, and impeccable hospitality, all of which make Lisbon a standout choice for business events."
Lisbon is one of Europe’s most accessible capitals, with direct flights from major global hubs. Humberto Delgado Airport is just a 15-minute drive from the city centre, ensuring seamless transfers for international delegates. The city has well-connected public transport system, including metro, trams, and buses, makes navigating Lisbon effortless for event attendees.
Throughout the FAM trip, Lisbon’s variety of event spaces made a lasting impression, each offering something unique for MICE planners.
A particular highlight was Pátio da Galé, a striking venue located in the heart of Praça do Comércio. Its historic arches and vast open space provide a flexible setting for large-scale events of up to 1,800 guests, making it ideal for everything from gala dinners to product launches. The location, right on Lisbon’s iconic riverfront square, adds to the wow-factor.
At the top of the city – quite literally – is the Vasco da Gama Tower, Portugal’s tallest building. Reception drinks here were a standout moment, with 360° panoramic views of the city creating a dramatic backdrop for evening events or executive networking functions.
Outside the city, the group visited the Sintra National Palace, a breathtaking venue steeped in Portuguese history. Set within the fairytale landscape of Sintra, the palace offers a truly regal setting for cultural programmes or high-end incentive events, blending history, architecture, and atmosphere.
To close the trip, the group experienced a workshop hosted at the Sport Lisboa e Benfica Stadium – a dynamic space for meetings and networking. The day included an exclusive tour and a memorable lunch in the Presidential Tribune, overlooking the pitch, proving that even sporting venues can provide impactful corporate experiences with a twist.
Lisbon offers an array of venues to suit every type of meeting or event, from modern conference centres to historic palaces. Other options to consider:
With Lisbon’s MICE offering continuing to evolve, there are also several exciting new venues set to open soon. We’ll be keeping a close eye on Andaz Lisbon by Hyatt, ME Lisbon by Meliá, and DUO Hotel Lisbon, Curio Collection by Hilton – each promising stylish, design-led spaces with strong appeal for corporate events and incentive groups. These upcoming additions will further strengthen Lisbon’s position as a go-to destination for meetings and events in Southern Europe.
Lisbon is renowned for its hospitality, with a wide range of accommodation options from boutique hotels to five-star luxury resorts. Additionally, its culinary scene is a major draw, with Michelin-starred restaurants, authentic seafood eateries, and traditional pastel de nata bakeries offering memorable dining experiences for delegates.
Highlights from the trip included:
Marcia’s itinerary brought Lisbon’s character to life through unforgettable activities that would translate perfectly to incentive programmes:
Sustainability is a growing priority for corporate events, and Lisbon is at the forefront of eco-conscious initiatives. Many venues, including the Lisbon Congress Centre, follow green event practices, while the city promotes responsible tourism and sustainable transport options.
"This trip truly highlighted the diversity and depth Lisbon offers. Whether you’re planning an incentive trip, conference, or exclusive VIP experience, there’s something here for every kind of event. The creativity and hospitality we experienced, from cooking classes to coastal jeep rides, show just how well Lisbon caters to the meetings and incentives market. I can’t wait to put this knowledge into practice for our clients at Trinity Event Solutions."
