Destination Champions: Discovering Malta for Meetings & Events

Welcome to the third instalment of our Destination Champions series, where we uncover inspiring locations for unforgettable meetings and events.

Following Claire’s article into the vibrant city of Barcelona, we’ve turned our attention to a sun-drenched Mediterranean gem with a unique blend of history, hospitality, and state-of-the-art event infrastructure. Welcome to Malta!

Louise Norris shares everything you need to know on this beautiful destination for meetings and events.

A small island with big appeal

Malta isn’t just beautiful, it’s brilliantly suited for business events. I’ve visited numerous times over the years, and what continues to impress me is how effortlessly it balances charm, practicality, and professionalism. You can drive around the entire island in under a day, which makes logistics a dream. No long transfers or hard-to-reach venues. Add to that the extensive international flight connections, and it’s a no-brainer for European events.

Despite its modest size, Malta packs a serious punch when it comes to hosting business events. Located in the heart of the Mediterranean, just south of Italy, Malta boasts over 300 days of sunshine a year, making it a reliable choice for year-round events. Its strategic location, excellent air connectivity, and widespread use of English add to its appeal for international delegates.

There’s a relaxed, can-do vibe across the island that instantly puts people at ease, something every event organiser hopes for.

Versatile venues for every brief

Whether you’re planning a high-level incentive, a stylish product launch, or a large-scale conference, Malta delivers. During our January staff conference, I presented a few of my top hotel picks that showcase the island’s range and flexibility:

  • InterContinental Malta – Right in the heart of St Julian’s, this five-star hotel combines elegance with excellent conference facilities. It offers over 24 meeting rooms and the InterContinental Arena Conference Centre, which accommodates up to 1,700 delegates.
  • Hilton Malta – A well-established business favourite, the Hilton offers multiple meeting rooms with stunning views over the Portomaso Marina. The service is consistently excellent – polished yet personal.
  • Corinthia St George’s Bay – Another gem for corporate events, with stylish indoor and outdoor spaces, and the ability to cater to both smaller meetings and gala evenings with a wow factor.
  • Hyatt Regency Malta – A newer addition to the scene, this hotel offers a fresh and modern take on Maltese hospitality. It’s great for incentives or smaller conferences with a touch of boutique sophistication.
  • The Phoenicia Malta – Just outside the city walls of Valletta, The Phoenicia is timeless. It blends classic elegance with refined facilities, ideal for leadership retreats or high-end incentive groups.

Incentives with a difference

One of the reasons I love Malta is its ability to offer so much in a small space. A corporate trip here can include:

  • Exploring the ancient streets of Mdina and Valletta (both UNESCO sites)
  • Sunset cruises around the Grand Harbour
  • Team-building activities in Gozo, such as quad biking or vineyard tours
  • Gala dinners in dramatic settings like coastal forts or Baroque palaces

And don’t forget the cuisine! Fresh seafood, rich pastas, and traditional Maltese dishes like rabbit stew and pastizzi make every meal memorable.

Sustainability in focus

Malta is also embracing sustainability, with many venues and hotels investing in greener operations. From eco-certified accommodation to local sourcing and reduced plastic use, the island is working hard to make tourism, and business events, more environmentally responsible.

Why I believe Malta works

Here’s why Malta is climbing the ranks as a meetings and events destination:

  • Excellent value for money compared to other European destinations
  • Compact size, making logistics easy and transfers short
  • Reliable weather, especially between March and November
  • A rich tapestry of culture, cuisine, and experiences
  • A warm and welcoming hospitality industry

From the heart - why Malta stands out

Malta is more than just a venue backdrop, it’s an experience. The blend of history, hospitality, and modern infrastructure makes it perfect for clients who want something a little different, without compromising on quality or convenience.

What I love most about Malta is how effortless it feels. From the short travel times to the friendly locals and seamless service. It’s a destination that surprises people in the best possible way and delivers a sense of occasion without overcomplicating things.

Whether you’re looking to wow your delegates or simply create a stress-free event with impact, Malta might just be your perfect match. It’s somewhere that continues to surprise and inspire me, even after all these years. I’d love nothing more than to help our clients discover the magic of Malta for themselves, get in touch today.
